The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow Fellowship in Ophthalmology (FRCS Ophthalmology) is aimed at candidates who have 6 years post-qualification experience. It is assessed at the standard of a General Ophthalmologist who is able to manage patients and their ophthalmic conditions independently in a safe and professional manner.
Eligibility criteria to become an examiner for the FRCS Ophthalmology are listed below.
Applications are welcomed from both ophthalmologists and physicians. All examiners are appointed to support all three parts of the exam: Part 1 and Part 2 (written papers) and Part 3 (structured oral and clinical components). Physician examiners support assessment in general medicine and medical emergencies across the written exams and Part 3 Structured Oral.
Clinicians who are currently taking, or who intend to take, the FRCS Ophthalmology examinations are not eligible to apply.
Principal Roles
Appointment will be for a period of five years in the first instance, renewable by the Surgical Examinations Board.
Part 1 and Part 2 activity is normally held online and face to face within the UK. The Part 3 structured oral and clinical examinations take place in our international centres. If invited to examine at Part 3, examiners will be required to travel for up to one week at a time. Therefore, clinicians should have the support of their employer to obtain leave for this purpose before they apply to be an examiner.
Examiners are required to:
- Undertake training prior to involvement in the examination and participate in ongoing assessment, training and development as an examiner.
- Contribute to the written, oral and clinical examinations at least once every two years.
- Support the examination process by honouring commitments to write questions, attend examinations and standard setting, and take part in quality assurance activities relating to the examination.
- Actively participate in ensuring that the examination is of the highest standards.
- Assess every candidate equally and fairly, without bias or prejudice.
- Ensure that the confidentiality of candidate information, examination results and exam materials is respected at all times.
